What is direct mail marketing?
A mailing puts a physical message at a home or business address. It can introduce a local service, reactivate a customer relationship or give a business owner evidence of a problem you can solve. The format matters less than why this recipient should care now.
Local reach
Choose neighborhoods inside your service area when the offer fits many nearby households. Check operational capacity before promoting a service you cannot schedule.
Named business outreach
Choose individual companies when relevance depends on industry, role or a verified website finding. Exclude firms your offer cannot help.
Customer reactivation
Use your own accurate customer records for a relevant reminder. Check preferences and prior complaints before including anyone in a new mailing.
Direct marketing also includes channels such as email; direct mail is the postal part. Choose the channel by buyer access, timing and acquisition economics. A tangible card still needs a working destination and a person responsible for answering.
↑ Back to topDirect mail marketing formats and list options
| Format | Useful for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Postcard | A visible offer or finding | Little room; public message |
| Letter in envelope | A longer explanation | Must earn the opening |
| Folded self-mailer | A menu or service overview | Folding and sealing rules |
| Handwritten-style | A personal-looking note | Style cannot replace relevance |
Addressed list
- Select individual homes or businesses.
- Match each card and report to a specific recipient.
- Budget for research, address checks and exclusions.
EDDM route mailing
- Select carrier routes rather than named prospects.
- Useful when the same local offer fits a broad area.
- Route demographics do not identify individual buyers.
USPS Every Door Direct Mail uses route coverage and qualifying mailpieces, not your named prospect list. USPS explains route selection, preparation and do-not-deliver handling at usps.com/business/every-door-direct-mail.htm. Our individualized First-Class postcard offer is a different service.
Handwritten-style may mean a printed handwriting font, machine-written text or a note written by a person. Ask which you are buying and avoid implying a personal relationship that does not exist. Compare direct mail postcards, postcard mailing and real estate postcards before choosing production.
↑ Back to topBuild a mailing list you can defend
Define geography, business type, buyer role and a reason your offer fits before collecting addresses. Start with your own customer records where appropriate or research public business information. A purchased list needs source, permitted-use and freshness checks; a vendor's label does not establish buying intent.
| Field | Save | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Business | Name, domain, segment | Still operating; good fit |
| Recipient | Name or relevant role | Current business connection |
| Address | Street, suite, ZIP Code | Correct business location |
| Source | Source URL and date | Allowed use; current record |
| History | CRM and suppression status | No conflicting outreach |
| Evidence | Finding, page and date | Reproduced before print |
Clean before approving the mailing
- Confirm address quality.Use an address-validation workflow with your mail provider, resolve suites and clarify how move updates and undeliverable pieces are handled. A standardized address does not prove the intended buyer works there.
- Deduplicate businesses and locations.Compare normalized names, domains and addresses. Decide whether a branch or headquarters owns the buying decision, and avoid sending several cards to the same office accidentally.
- Apply exclusions again at print export.Remove do-not-mail requests, unsuitable prospects and conflicting active conversations. Keep suppression records available for later imports and coordinate exclusions with any other outreach channel.
Personalization: one finding and a useful report
Our method starts with one verified finding about each prospect's website. Follow the visitor's real route, record the page and date, and save evidence another reviewer can reproduce. A scanner flag alone is not enough to claim that a site is broken.
An observation you can show
- A visible estimate button opened a missing page during a recorded check.
- The contact page displayed a form shortcode instead of visible fields.
- The report names the page, device, check date and next step.
A claim to leave out
- Your website is losing thousands, with no business data.
- A generic compliment with only a first-name substitution.
- Missing markup presented as proof of a ranking penalty.

{{sender_name}}, {{business}}, {{contact_details}}Send the QR code to a branded report page for that prospect, with the evidence, limits of the check and a clear reply route. Include a readable short URL for people who do not scan. Recheck before print, protect any sensitive report content and keep findings off public postcards when they reveal private information.
↑ Back to topB2B direct mail marketing for agencies
B2B direct mail marketing needs a relevant business reason to reach the office. Address the person or role connected to the service and expect that reception staff may handle the piece first. Put the company name, useful observation and sender identity where they are easy to understand.
Match the offer
An agency selling website fixes needs functional evidence it can act on. Select a finding tied to the service, then offer a scoped review or repair rather than a broad redesign by default.
Agree on the brand
For white-label campaigns, approve sender details, card design, report branding and reply ownership. Decide who approves findings and who handles questions before producing the cards.
Coordinate the follow-up
Log mail, email and conversations in the same campaign record. Suppress opted-out recipients and pause queued outreach when a reply makes the next message inappropriate.
Define fulfillment before offering a fix. Our white-label web development, WordPress management and maintenance start from $250 with a fixed written quote before work. Agency staging can use your domain, with NDA and non-solicitation available.
↑ Back to topDirect mail marketing cost by component
Price the full campaign rather than comparing print prices alone. Ask what is included, what changes with volume and who owns the list, design files, report destination and measurement data. Keep internal staff time visible even when no supplier invoices for it.
| Component | What drives it | Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| List and research | Data quality; review depth | Source and verification |
| Copy and design | Variants; individual findings | Proofs and approvals |
| Print and preparation | Stock; size; folding | Finished mailing format |
| Postage | Mail class; dimensions | Included or separate |
| Report and tracking | Pages; URLs; phone tools | Access and ongoing costs |
| Reply handling | Staff time; qualification | Named response owner |
Standard custom postcard offer
$10 per custom postcard, 50-card minimum ($500). Includes prospect research, one verified website finding per prospect, design, printing, USPS First-Class postage and a QR code to a branded report page for that prospect.
First campaign intro pack
100 custom postcards for $500 ($5 per card), with the same included research, finding, design, printing, USPS First-Class postage and QR report page. Agencies can run the campaign white-label.
Those are our researched custom postcard prices, not market averages for generic printing or route mail. Read the postcard marketing cost breakdown and pricing. For independent postage estimates, check the current USPS price list: pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm.
Campaign cost = supplier charges + staff time + other campaign tools Acquisition cost = total campaign cost / new customers attributed Break-even customers = campaign cost / contribution per new customer, rounded up Use contribution after delivery costs, not gross sales; count repeat value only when supported. With no new customers, report no acquisitions; acquisition cost is undefined.
How to launch a direct mail marketing campaign
Use a pilot you can afford to learn from. Write down your spending limit, review window and decision rules before ordering; do not treat a small test as a reliable response-rate benchmark. The direct mail campaign guide expands the planning process.
- Step 1
Choose the audience and outcome
Define the buyer, service area, offer and qualification criteria. Assign an owner for replies and decide what makes an inquiry useful before selecting a format.
- Step 2
Prepare and approve the list
Verify fit and addresses, deduplicate and apply exclusions. For route mail, review selected coverage instead; keep the approved audience version with the campaign record.
- Step 3
Build the message and destination
For personalized outreach, verify the finding and match each card to its report. Create the response route, short URL and tracking identifiers, then test the destination on a phone.
- Step 4
Proof the finished piece
Inspect actual-size copy, address space, QR contrast and the physical print proof. Confirm mail class, dimensions and preparation with your printer or USPS before approving production.
- Step 5
Mail and staff the response route
Save the final recipient export, approved artwork, production quantity and mailing date. Confirm that the phone, inbox and form work and that the assigned person can access the campaign record.
- Step 6
Review outcomes before expanding
Reconcile returns, visits, replies and sales at the agreed review point. Investigate weak links, honor removal requests and change one major variable at a time in the next test.
How effective is direct mail marketing?
Effectiveness depends on the list, offer, execution and your economics. We do not publish a universal response rate or claim that a mailed card caused every later sale. Direct mail marketing statistics are useful only when the audience, denominator, attribution window and definition of response are disclosed.
| Method | What it shows | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| QR scans | Visits via encoded link | Tests, bots, repeat scans |
| Unique URLs | Campaign or prospect visits | Links can be shared |
| Call tracking | Calls to campaign number | Wrong numbers; repeat calls |
| Match-back | Buyers matching mailed list | Match does not prove cause |
Build a measurement record
- Separate mailed, returned and responding records.Keep a stable campaign ID and recipient ID. State whether your response-rate denominator is mailed pieces or a justified delivery estimate; no return does not prove delivery or that someone read the card.
- Define a response and deduplicate it.Track scans and visits separately from qualified replies, meetings held and customers. Link repeated activity to one business where possible, and exclude your own proof checks.
- Choose the attribution window in advance.Record campaign-coded actions and ask new inquiries how they found you. If a prospect also received email, keep overlapping touches visible instead of crediting the same sale in full to both channels.
- Use a comparison when practical.A comparable randomly held-back group helps assess lift beyond sales that might have happened anyway. Small samples remain uncertain; report raw counts alongside rates and avoid declaring a winner from a few actions.
For match-back, compare later customer records with the mailed list using a documented matching rule and review ambiguous matches. Use access controls and retention limits for prospect data; avoid personal details in URLs. A dedicated number can help attribute calls without recording them.

Before you approve print
- Make the sender and offer clear.Identify the advertiser, explain what happens after a response and remove unsupported claims or artificial urgency. Keep sensitive customer information off an exposed card.
- Use one primary action.Make the QR destination useful and include a readable URL or contact route. Check contrast, legibility, mobile display and any language-specific version at actual print size.
- Honor do-not-mail requests.Provide an easy way to ask for removal, record the request and apply it before future exports. Tell your production provider how to enforce exclusions, including the USPS do-not-deliver process when using EDDM.
- Confirm the mailpiece rules.Check dimensions, stock, address placement, postage markings and any folding or sealing requirements with the provider before print. A creative format is not automatically eligible for the postage category you budgeted.
USPS rules and CAN-SPAM are different checks
CAN-SPAM governs commercial email, not physical postal mail. If you add email follow-ups, that email needs its own compliance review, including B2B messages. Source: FTC CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide, ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business.
For retail First-Class postcard pricing, USPS lists a minimum of 3.5 x 5 inches, a maximum of 4.25 x 6 inches and thickness from 0.007 to 0.016 inches. Larger cards use letter or flat pricing as applicable; dimensions alone do not settle eligibility. Source: USPS Domestic Mail Manual 101, pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/101.htm.
↑ Back to topWhen direct mail is the wrong channel
Consider a researched mailing when
- You can identify suitable buyers at reliable postal addresses.
- The offer supports the full acquisition cost.
- You have evidence worth sharing and capacity to answer.
- You can fund a test without depending on immediate sales.
Wait or choose another channel when
- You need immediate demand or cannot absorb a failed pilot.
- Addresses are uncertain or the offer has no clear audience.
- The landing page or reply process is broken.
- Low contribution per customer cannot support the mailing cost.
Do not buy our research-heavy service if you already have a clean list, finished artwork and only need printing and postage. A printer or mailing house may fit that job better. A broad neighborhood offer may suit EDDM more than individual website research.
If the destination needs repair, address that first through your team or WordPress management. Fer Marketing is operated by Fer LLC in Wyoming, founded by Fernando Marcano, an IT engineer with 20+ years of hands-on experience. We serve the US market in English and Spanish.
↑ Back to topFrequently asked questions
What is direct mail marketing compared with email?
Direct mail marketing sends physical advertising to postal addresses. Email sends electronic messages to inboxes. Both need a relevant audience and offer, but production, address validation, measurement and compliance checks differ.
How effective is direct mail marketing for a small business?
Judge it by qualified inquiries and customers against total campaign cost and contribution per customer. Results depend on fit, address quality, offer and follow-up. A scan alone does not establish a sale, and no universal response rate predicts your campaign.
How much does direct mail marketing cost at Fer Marketing?
Custom postcards cost $10 each with a 50-card minimum ($500). The first campaign intro pack is 100 custom postcards for $500 ($5 per card). Both include research, one verified website finding per prospect, design, printing, USPS First-Class postage and a QR code to a branded prospect report page.
Is EDDM the same as an addressed mailing list?
No. EDDM selects postal routes for broad local coverage. An addressed list selects specific recipients and supports prospect-level personalization. Choose based on whether your offer fits the neighborhood broadly or requires research about individual businesses.
What are useful B2B direct mail marketing ideas?
Send a relevant website observation with evidence, a clear next step and a report matched to the business. Verify the finding before printing, identify the sender and avoid claiming lost revenue or guaranteed results. Coordinate other outreach so replies and removals stop inappropriate follow-ups.
Do I need direct mail marketing services near me?
A local provider can be useful when you need in-person print review or drop-off help. Location alone does not establish research quality or measurement. Ask any provider about address checks, finished proofs, mail class, exclusions, included costs and access to campaign data.
Does CAN-SPAM apply to physical direct mail?
CAN-SPAM covers commercial email rather than physical postal mail. Email follow-ups need separate checks, including B2B email. For postal campaigns, honor do-not-mail requests, verify USPS preparation rules and review applicable advertising and privacy requirements.
Can agencies use your direct mail marketing white-label?
Yes. Agencies can run the personalized postcard campaign under their own brand. Agree on sender identity, report branding, approvals and reply ownership before production. We confirm the scope and quote before work and payment.
Send your audience and offer through contact, WhatsApp or fer@fer.marketing; we reply the same business day, 9 AM to 9 PM ET, and confirm a written quote before work. Custom postcards are $10 each with a 50-card minimum ($500), or 100 for $500 for your first campaign, with white-label delivery available for agencies.
