SEO for lawyers: what our study can tell you
Our October 2026 automated audit covered 300 reachable law firm websites from OpenStreetMap listings in 20 US metros, with 15 manual spot-checks. We checked basic technical and contact elements, not rankings, search demand or signed cases. No firm is named in the law firm website study.
- Had at least one of 10 basic issues
- 65% (196)
- Had three or more basic issues
- 25% (75)
- Run WordPress
- 72% (216)
Fer Marketing law firm website study, October 2026. N=300.
These findings help choose what to inspect first. They do not establish how common an issue is among all US firms, and a missing element does not automatically explain weak search performance. Confirm each observation in a browser and connect it to an actual visitor or indexing problem before paying for a fix.
↑ Back to topTechnical SEO for lawyers: the working checklist
Inspect the homepage, each important practice page, attorney biographies and contact routes. Record the URL, observed behavior, device, date and a repeatable test. Start with pages people need to find or use, rather than chasing a perfect audit score.
Check the published page, not only plugin settings
- Crawling and indexingUse Search Console URL Inspection to review a priority page, its indexed state and selected canonical. Check for accidental noindex directives, blocked resources and redirects; include intended public canonical pages in the sitemap, while keeping private staging protected.
- Titles and meta descriptionsGive each page a distinct, accurate title and a useful summary that matches its service and location. Our study found no meta description on 15% (44) of sites; adding one is editorial control, not a promise that Google will display it.
- One clear H1Use one main heading as an editorial convention, then organize supporting topics under descriptive subheadings. In our sample, 27% (80) did not have exactly one H1; multiple H1s alone do not establish a ranking problem.
- Speed and TTFBCompare representative pages in PageSpeed Insights and browser Network tools, repeating under similar conditions. In our audit, 11% (33) took more than 800 ms to start responding, with median TTFB 143 ms; TTFB is not total load time or a complete user-experience score.
- Mobile viewport and contactConfirm the viewport tag, readable text, navigation and tap targets on a real phone. The viewport tag was absent on 4% (12); its presence alone does not prove a usable layout. Test visible phone links and form delivery with the firm's permission.
- Broken links, HTTPS and mixed contentCrawl important routes, manually verify errors and repair source links or relevant redirects. We found a broken internal link or image on 5% (14), and mixed content on 3% (9). Inspect HTTPS resources and certificate behavior separately; our study did not measure HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects.

↑ Back to topLegalService and Attorney schema: use real facts
We found no LegalService or Attorney structured data on 49% (148) of sites, and no JSON-LD at all on 16% (49). This is an implementation finding, not evidence of a Google penalty. Markup should describe the real business information visible on the website.
Choose the right entity
Use LegalService for the legal business. Schema.org marks Attorney as deprecated in favor of LegalService; do not confuse the older business type with a Person record for an individual attorney.
Keep one consistent identity
Check the business name, canonical URL, phone and genuine office address. Review the SEO plugin's existing output before adding custom JSON-LD, so conflicting names or duplicate entities do not accumulate.
Validate and inspect
Test syntax with Schema Markup Validator and inspect applicable Google features with Rich Results Test. Confirm the published source after caching; valid markup does not guarantee a rich result or higher placement.
Business type: LegalService Identity: approved business name + canonical URL + stable @id Contact: public telephone + genuine office address Supporting facts: verified hours and official profiles Checks: visible-page match, syntax, duplicate plugin output
Type references: Schema.org LegalService, schema.org/LegalService, and Attorney, schema.org/Attorney. Google's feature requirements are separate: developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/local-business.
↑ Back to topLocal SEO for law firms: prove where you work
Local SEO connects a genuine firm, its services and its location. Google describes local results in terms of relevance, distance and prominence; an SEO vendor cannot move an office closer to a searcher. See Google Business Profile guidance: support.google.com/business/answer/7091.
Local information to review with the firm
- Google Business ProfileConfirm firm-controlled access, verification status, the actual business name, relevant categories, public contact details and current hours. Check office and practitioner eligibility before creating profiles; avoid invented offices or keyword additions to the business name.
- NAP consistencyCompare name, address and phone across the website, Business Profile and important professional listings. Correct obsolete offices and wrong numbers first, recording the owner of each listing so future changes reach the right person.
- Practice area plus city pagesCreate a page when the firm genuinely serves that location and can explain something useful about the service there. Do not imply a physical office where none exists or publish cloned pages with only the city changed.
- Reviews within bar rulesHave the firm approve a neutral request process under applicable bar and platform rules. Avoid incentives and selective requests based on expected sentiment; have responses reviewed for confidentiality, including whether acknowledging a client relationship is appropriate.
Lawyer SEO content: answer the client's next question
A useful practice page explains what the firm handles, where it practices and how an initial inquiry works. Ask an attorney to own accuracy, jurisdiction and review dates. Publishing more pages does not replace a clear answer on the page a prospective client actually needs.
| Element | What to include | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Service + real location | Scope is accurate |
| Client questions | Process + documents | Attorney reviewed |
| Firm details | Relevant lawyer bio | Claims verified |
| Next action | Call or contact route | Works on mobile |
| FAQs | Actual intake questions | No outcome promises |
SEO keywords for lawyers should follow the service
For criminal defense, immigration, bankruptcy, employment or estate planning, start with the firm's actual services and intake questions. Pair a practice with a city only where it reflects the service area. Examples are editorial topics, not claims about keyword volume or difficulty.
H1: {{practice area}} lawyer serving {{real location}}
Opening: who the firm helps and which matters it handles
H2: What the initial conversation covers
H2: Information to prepare before contacting the firm
H2: Common questions, with jurisdiction-specific review
Next action: approved contact instructions and disclaimersWrite English and Spanish pages for the people who will read them, with accurate service-language claims. Keep navigation, biographies and contact instructions consistent. See law firm website design for page structure and the law firm marketing plan for broader channel decisions.
↑ Back to topHow to turn a lawyer SEO audit into verified fixes
Work from evidence and acceptance criteria. A ticket saying 'improve SEO' cannot tell a developer when the work is finished; a ticket naming a broken contact link and its correct destination can. Group related template issues before quoting changes.
- Step 1
Capture the baseline
Inventory priority URLs and save the observed issue, screenshots, crawl results and available Search Console data. Confirm access ownership and identify existing faults before changing the site.
- Step 2
Prioritize and agree on scope
Address blocked public pages and broken contact routes before cosmetic audit warnings. Write the exact affected templates, proposed repairs, exclusions, price and acceptance checks; have the firm approve legal copy.
- Step 3
Prepare staging and recovery
Back up matching files and database, confirm a recovery route and use protected staging. Keep copied inquiry data restricted and prevent staging forms from sending unintended messages.
- Step 4
Implement and test
Fix the agreed theme, plugin or content output. Retest headings, metadata, structured data, links, mobile layout and authorized form delivery; check that a template repair also works on other affected pages.
- Step 5
Publish and verify
Deploy the approved changes without overwriting new live inquiries, clear relevant caches and repeat the live tests. Record changed URLs, dates, results and remaining issues; schedule search-performance review separately from technical acceptance.
Measure discovery, contact and qualified inquiries
Separate visibility from business outcomes. In our sample, 22% (65) had no GA/GTM analytics signature; that does not prove they had no analytics. Likewise, a tracking tag in source does not prove correct measurement or consent handling.
| Layer | Record | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Clicks + impressions | Page and query trends |
| Indexing | Priority URL status | Investigate exclusions |
| Contact | Calls + form receipts | Deduplicate and test |
| Intake | Qualified inquiries | Firm defines fit |
| Operations | Fixes + regressions | Evidence per ticket |
Compare like periods, annotate releases and separate branded searches from service discovery. Ask intake staff to classify relevance without exposing case details to marketing tools. A phone-link click is not a completed call, and a submitted form is not a retained matter.
↑ Back to topSEO marketing for lawyers: set review milestones
Agree on a delivery date after inspecting the work. Technical acceptance and search visibility are different milestones: a repaired link can be tested after release, while Google's recrawling and competitive results follow a separate process. No universal timetable proves that a firm will rank or receive cases.
- Before work
Confirm the starting point
Agree on priority pages, existing data, access and the written repair scope. If measurement is missing, acknowledge that historical attribution may remain unavailable.
- At release
Verify the technical change
Repeat the acceptance tests and save the published result. Check for regressions before marking the repair complete.
- After recrawling
Review search interpretation
Revisit indexing and visible search presentation. Keep a change log so a later movement is not automatically credited to the last edit.
- Ongoing
Choose the next investment
Use search and intake evidence to decide whether to improve a practice page, local information or a technical issue. Pause spending where the next action lacks a defensible purpose.
Google's SEO Starter Guide says changes can take hours to several months to be reflected, and may produce no noticeable search impact: developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide. These are general observations, not a Fer Marketing delivery or results promise.
↑ Back to topHow to choose a law firm SEO company
Ask SEO companies for lawyers to show a sample deliverable, explain account ownership and distinguish implementation from ongoing marketing. A useful proposal names the pages, evidence and responsibilities. A ranking guarantee cannot substitute for that detail.
Look for
- A written scope with actual URLs, acceptance checks and exclusions.
- Firm-owned domain, hosting, Search Console and Business Profile access.
- An attorney approval route for content, reviews and advertising claims.
- Clear reports separating completed work from observed search changes.
Walk away from
- Guaranteed rankings, case volume or privileged access to Google.
- Private blog networks (PBNs) sold as ranking shortcuts.
- Paid ranking links, hidden placements or unexplained link packages.
- Copied city pages and reports that conceal what actually changed.
Google's spam policies describe link schemes and doorway abuse: developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies. Ask where links will appear and why those placements serve readers. If a provider refuses to explain the method, do not give it access to the firm's site.
↑ Back to topSEO services for lawyers: our technical scope
Fer Marketing is operated by Fer LLC in Wyoming, founded by Fernando Marcano, an IT engineer with 20+ years of hands-on experience. We serve the US market in English and Spanish. Our role here is technical WordPress implementation.
What we do
Scoped fixes to metadata, headings, structured data, speed, mobile behavior and broken routes, starting from $250. The actual work and price are set in a fixed written quote before work begins.
Agency delivery
White-label work can use staging on your agency domain, with NDA and non-solicitation available. Your agency can own strategy and the client relationship while we implement the approved technical tickets.
When not to hire us
Choose another provider if you need full-service legal marketing, PPC management or an ongoing editorial and link-building program. If your technical foundation is already sound, another audit may be a poor use of your budget.
Compare pricing, WordPress management and WordPress maintenance. Agencies can review white-label web development. Send your URL and observed problem through contact; pay by card through Stripe after scope is agreed.
↑ Back to topFrequently asked questions
What is SEO for lawyers?
It is the work of making a law firm's services easier to discover and understand through search. Technical accessibility, useful practice pages and accurate local information work together; none guarantees rankings or cases.
How much do SEO services for lawyers cost?
Our technical WordPress fixes start from $250, with a fixed written quote before work. That is a starting price for scoped implementation, not a full-service law firm SEO package or a promise to fix every issue for that amount.
How long does lawyer SEO take?
We set a technical delivery date after reviewing scope. Search visibility follows its own timeline and may not improve after a particular fix. Review completed repairs, indexing and qualified inquiries separately instead of treating a calendar deadline as a ranking guarantee.
What should local SEO for law firms include?
Review the firm's eligible Google Business Profile, accurate name, address and phone, genuine practice locations and an approved review process. Publish useful service pages for places the firm actually serves, without suggesting nonexistent offices.
What are useful SEO keywords for lawyers?
Start with actual practice areas, locations and questions heard during intake. Criminal defense lawyer, immigration attorney and estate planning lawyer are examples to adapt, not verified search-volume claims. Assign each page a clear purpose instead of repeating every variation.
Does SEO for criminal defense lawyers differ from immigration SEO?
The technical checks are similar, but the questions, jurisdiction, urgency and intake process differ. Have an attorney shape the page brief and approve the claims. The same approach applies to bankruptcy, employment and estate planning pages.
How do I find the best law firm SEO company?
Compare the scope against your actual gap: technical repairs, content, local visibility or broader marketing. Ask for ownership terms, a sample report and a clear method. Reject guaranteed rankings and private blog networks offered to manipulate search results.
Can a lawyers SEO agency hire you white-label?
Yes. We implement scoped WordPress technical work under your agency brand, with staging on your domain and NDA and non-solicitation available. Your agency retains strategy and client communication; we agree on the work, price and handoff in writing.
Send your website URL to fer@fer.marketing or contact us through WhatsApp for a fixed written quote before work, with technical WordPress fixes from $250 and white-label delivery for agencies. We reply the same business day, 9 AM to 9 PM ET.
