Link building for lawyers: earned mentions, not bought links

Link building for law firms is the work of earning a mention that points to a page worth citing: a bar listing, a local news quote, a legal publication, or an interview. We do that outreach inside monthly SEO for law firms at $1,000/month. We do not sell link packages, price links one by one, or buy links. No placement is guaranteed.

Fix the practice page before anyone is asked to link to it

The first month of a monthly agreement is the same shape as a one-month project: we put the work on the few fixes that change whether the site can be understood. On-page comes first. Search engines learn what the firm does from titles, meta descriptions, headings and the page itself. Without that, ranking from links alone is a poor plan, and earning the links is harder, because nobody wants to cite a thin page.

A page worth citing

A link-worthy practice page names the matters the firm accepts, who it can serve, which office handles the work, and how to reach a person. The responsible attorney approves every claim about results, fees and specialties. We keep improving those service pages after month one. New pages appear, some pages slow down, and a law can make last year's explanation stale. Core service pages are the relevance assets, not a blog post that never gets updated. Law firm website design is the build side of that same standard.

Order we use in the first month

  • On-page SEO on the pages that should earn the mention.Titles, meta descriptions, headings and the body, written so a searcher and a writer can both see what the firm does. The attorney approves legal meaning before we publish.
  • Speed, with a 1 to 2 second bar for that pass.We work on caching and, in the monthly scope, server-level speed. In a first pass we aim for a load in the 1 to 2 second range. If the host blocks that, we write the limit down instead of pretending the page is fast.
  • Directories with one name, address and phone.The site should appear in the relevant directories with the same public facts, especially the same phone number and address. That consistency is a signal we trust more than a block of new links.
  • A fully filled Google Business Profile.For firms that serve their own city or state, which is most firms, the profile matters once it is accurate and the firm asks real clients for reviews. We do not buy reviews. See local SEO for lawyers.

Directories and one firm name are the foundation

NAP means name, address and phone. Before outreach, we build a master record the firm approves and compare it with the website, the Google Business Profile, the bar directory and the legal directories already visible for the target keywords. Listing the firm where competitors appear is the method: we look up the target queries, note the directories in those results, and submit or correct the firm there with the same NAP. The firm decides which paid directories it will approve. This is not a bulk citation package.

The usual break is the firm name

The most common NAP fix on legal projects is the name. Attorneys practice for years, sometimes decades. They used another firm name, practiced under their personal name, or moved from a personal name to a firm name, or the other way around. Old listings keep the old name. Offices move and new offices get added, and those addresses have to be updated too. Many directories can list two or more addresses, and each one still needs the same name and the right phone. The phone number is the fact that changes least. We do not spend the month rewriting numbers that were never wrong.

One approved row before a directory edit
Public name the firm uses now: {{legal or trade name}}
Names to retire: {{prior firm name, prior personal name}}
Office: {{street, suite, city}} / second office if any: {{address}}
Public phone: {{number}} / who answers: {{role}}
Page to cite: {{practice or office URL}}
Directory / listing URL / status: {{open, submitted, corrected, firm declined}}

Bar directories often identify the lawyer, not a marketing landing page. We do not rewrite a bar record into a keyword string. Community and court-related listings stay factual. Use the Google Business Profile checklist for the profile itself: one profile per real staffed office, categories that match the work, and hours a caller can test. Local SEO for lawyers covers eligibility, Spanish intake and location pages when those are in scope.

Online public relations for attorneys, as outreach we can show

Online public relations for attorneys, in this service, means pitching the firm to writers, publications and interview hosts for a mention in an article or an interview. It is not a paid-media retainer. We do not manage ads. The work we trust is outreach for collaborations, a guest post the lawyer actually writes, an interview, or a quote based on knowledge the attorney has. The firm approves every quote and sets aside time if a host wants a conversation. No placement is guaranteed. The editor can say no, and often will.

Link building services for lawyers are frequently a menu of guest posts and niche edits with a promised count. We do not sell that menu. A guest post is in bounds when the attorney writes or approves the substance and the publication would run it without a ranking deal. A niche edit, meaning a link inserted into an older article for a fee, is a paid link. If the firm ever chooses one, it needs rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow", and it is outside our monthly outreach.

Pitch the attorney approves before it is sent
Subject: Source on {{public question}}, {{city}}

I read {{article or beat}}. {{Attorney name}} at {{firm}} handles {{accepted matters}} in {{place}}.
They can explain {{specific question}} on the record, without discussing client matters.
If a short quote or interview is useful, reply and the firm will confirm a time.
We are not asking you to add a link. If you cite the firm, this page matches the topic: {{URL}}.
{{Sender name, role, public phone}}

Earned mention

  • The attorney is quoted for knowledge the firm can stand behind
  • The firm approves the words and makes time for the interview
  • The publication decides whether to link
  • A paid placement, if any, is marked sponsored or nofollow
  • The pitch is declined in the report when the answer is no

Bought placement

  • A fee buys a link that is meant to pass ranking credit
  • The anchor text is chosen for a keyword, not for the sentence
  • The lawyer never speaks and does not review the page
  • The report hides nofollow or sponsored
  • The vendor guarantees a number of live links

For a personal injury practice the same rule applies: the attorney speaks only about what the firm can say in public. See SEO for personal injury lawyers for the page that pitch should cite. A law firm marketing plan is where outreach sits next to intake, not instead of it.

Buying backlinks for lawyers is a bad bet

People search for ways to buy backlinks for lawyers because a package looks faster than a reporter who might say no. We will not buy them. If a vendor can sell the same links to you, a competitor can buy them too. That is not an advantage you can keep. The signals we would rather build are pages that answer the query, clear titles and descriptions, a fast site, and the same name, address and phone on the profile and on every serious directory.

Google's link spam section, in the spam policies, includes buying or selling links so they affect ranking, advertorials and paid guest posts that pass ranking credit, excessive exchanges, automated link programs, and low-quality directory or bookmark links. Payment is not only cash. Goods or services traded for a ranking link sit in the same group. Marking a paid link rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" is how Google says a paid link can avoid that pattern. Stripping those attributes to make a paid link count is the opposite of what we will do.

A paid recommendation can also be an ethics question

ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) says a lawyer shall not give anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services, with listed exceptions such as the reasonable cost of advertisements. The Model Rules are published by the ABA. They are not the rule of every state. Whether a paid article, a paid directory badge or a paid 'best lawyer' listing raises a bar issue depends on the firm's state rules and on what the payment buys. The firm should ask its own ethics counsel. We are not a law firm and we do not clear advertising.

How to vet a law firm link building provider

Ask what the provider did to the site last month, not only which links went live. The failure we see most often is an agency that starts with on-page work and then drifts into link building plus a report. Service pages stop being updated. New URLs ship without titles. Speed slips. A links-only report can look busy while the pages that need to rank go stale.

Questions before you hire

  • What will you change on the site this month?The answer should name pages, titles, content and speed, not only destinations they hope to pitch. If on-page work ended after month one, that is the drift to reject.
  • Do you guarantee rankings, link counts or placements?A guarantee is a reason to walk away. Nobody controls the results, and a promised count pushes the vendor toward links they can buy.
  • Will you buy links or sell them by the unit?If the offer is a package, a price per link, or a niche edit, you are looking at paid ranking links. Ask how rel="sponsored" and rel="nofollow" are handled.
  • Who approves what the public will read?The attorney should approve quotes, guest posts and directory claims. The firm should own the profile and the directory logins.
  • What does the monthly report contain besides links?Use the columns below. A report that cannot say whether a link is sponsored is not finished.
What a monthly link report must show
ColumnWhat belongs there
URLThe public page where the mention appears, or the pitch target if it is not live
DateThe day it was pitched, published, declined or removed
AnchorThe visible words of the link, or a note that the mention has no link
Target pageThe firm URL the link points to, and why that page matches the article
nofollow or sponsoredWhether the link is rel="nofollow", rel="sponsored", both, or a normal editorial link
StatusPitched, waiting on the firm, published, declined, or removed

What we do for $1,000/month

Fer Marketing is operated by Fer LLC (Wyoming); founder Fernando Marcano is an IT engineer with 20+ years of hands-on experience. We work in English and Spanish; Fernando is a native Spanish speaker. These are background credentials, not evidence of law firm campaign results. We do not claim a link count, a ranking or a client result on this page.

  • On-page, in the same month

    Title tags, meta descriptions, headings, content, Spanish translations, site speed and server-level work. Service pages stay in the queue after the first month. The attorney approves legal claims.

  • Off-page, without a link package

    Google Business Profile optimization, NAP cleanup and consistency, listings in the directories where competitors appear for the target keywords, and outreach that pitches the firm to writers, publications and interview hosts for mentions in articles and interviews.

  • What this price is not

    No link packages, no per-link pricing and no bought links. No placement is guaranteed. The firm approves quotes and makes time for interviews. Month to month, with no long-term contract. We do not manage paid ads.

  • Agencies

    Agencies can resell the same monthly SEO white-label. Your agency keeps the client. The scope does not change into a link menu. See white-label SEO.

  1. Step 1

    Read the pages a writer would cite

    Review the practice and office URLs, titles, headings and claims. List what is thin, slow or inconsistent before any pitch goes out. The attorney marks what can be said in public.

  2. Step 2

    Set the speed and the NAP record

    Work through caching and server-level speed, then align the firm name, offices and phone on the site, the profile and the directories competitors already use. Record old names and old offices instead of leaving them live.

  3. Step 3

    Agree the outreach list

    Choose publications, reporters and hosts that fit the practice. Draft pitches with the template above. Nothing is sent until the firm approves the wording and the time it can give to an interview.

  4. Step 4

    Pitch and log the answer

    Send the approved pitch. Record a decline the same way as a publication. Do not replace a no with a paid link. Do not promise the editor anything about rankings.

  5. Step 5

    Report links and on-page work together

    Each month show the URL, date, anchor, target page, whether the link is nofollow or sponsored, and the status, plus the titles, pages and speed items that changed. Month to month. Either side can stop.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell link building packages for lawyers?

No. Fer Marketing does not sell link packages, per-link pricing or bought links. Outreach for earned mentions is part of monthly SEO for law firms at $1,000/month. No placement is guaranteed. The firm approves quotes and makes time for interviews.

How much does law firm link building cost with you?

It is not priced on its own. Monthly SEO for law firms is $1,000/month, month to month, with no long-term contract. That fee covers on-page work and the off-page work described on this page, including outreach. We do not add a fee per link.

Is buying backlinks against bar rules?

It can be. ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) says a lawyer shall not give anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services, with listed exceptions such as the reasonable cost of advertisements. State rules differ. Whether a paid placement is a problem depends on those rules and on what the payment buys. Ask the firm's ethics counsel. We are not a law firm. Buying ranking links also conflicts with Google's spam policies unless the link is marked rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

Do legal directories still help?

A directory helps when people use it to find a lawyer and the listing shows the same name, address and phone as the site. We add the firm to directories where competitors appear for the target keywords, after the firm approves any paid listing. Low-quality directories and bookmark sites are not part of the work.

Can agencies resell this?

Yes. Agencies can offer the monthly SEO white-label. The work stays on-page plus profile, NAP, competitor directories and earned outreach. It does not become a link-building package. Details are on the white-label SEO page.

Do you guarantee links or rankings?

No. We do not guarantee a placement, a ranking or a number of mentions. Editors decide whether to quote the firm. Search results are not ours to promise. The monthly report shows what was pitched, what was published and what changed on the site.

What should a monthly link report show?

Each row needs the URL, the date, the anchor, the target page on the firm site, whether the link is nofollow or sponsored, and the status: pitched, waiting, published, declined or removed. The same report should list the on-page work done that month. A links-only report is a warning sign.

What should we fix before outreach?

The practice page, then speed, then directories and the Google Business Profile. We use that order because a thin or slow page is hard to cite and hard for search engines to understand. Outreach starts after the firm has a page it is willing to have quoted.

Send the site, the offices and the pages you want cited through contact or fer@fer.marketing. Monthly SEO for law firms is $1,000/month, month to month, with no link package and no placement guarantee. We reply the same business day, 9 AM to 9 PM ET.
