Law firm marketing plan: a practical 2026 template

A law firm marketing plan defines whom you serve, which matters you want, how people find you and how intake turns inquiries into signed engagements. Use this template to connect website repairs, local search, content and referral outreach to a budget and a named owner. Our study of 300 law firm websites helps identify what to check before paying for more traffic.

Build your law firm marketing plan

A useful plan makes choices: a practice area, a serviceable geography, an intake capacity and activities someone can finish. Fill in the blanks using your records, then share the page with the attorney, intake lead and whoever publishes or buys media.

One-page law firm marketing plan template
Period: [quarter] | Plan owner: [name] | Attorney approver: [name]
Audience: [practice area, geography, language, decision trigger]
Matter fit: [accepted work] | Exclusions: [work we decline]
Capacity: [consultations available] | Intake owner: [name]
Baseline: [qualified inquiries, held consultations, signed matters]
Goal: [metric] from [own baseline] to [chosen target] by [date]
Foundation: [website or intake repair, owner, acceptance test]
Channels: [activity, audience, destination page, owner]
Budget: [cash cap] | Staff time: [hours] | Reserve: [amount]
Measurement: [source record, attribution rule, review date]
Approval: [state rules checked, copy approved, version saved]
Decision: [continue, revise or pause condition]
  1. Step 1

    Choose the work and audience

Name the matters you can accept, jurisdictions you serve and language you can support through intake. Exclude work that creates conflicts or exceeds capacity.

  2. Step 2

    Record the baseline and bottleneck

Review recent inquiries and their outcomes. If people cannot reach intake or nobody follows up, assign that repair before adding promotion.

  3. Step 3

    Select activities and assign resources

Give each activity an owner, destination page, cash limit and staff-time allowance. Choose a manageable set using the worksheet below.

  4. Step 4

    Approve, launch and review

Have the responsible attorney review the materials under applicable rules. Test the contact journey, record the launch date and compare results at the scheduled review.

Law firm marketing strategy starts with intake

Set targets from your own baseline and available attorney time. A qualified inquiry means a potential matter that matches your written practice, geography and initial eligibility criteria, subject to conflicts checks and attorney review. Keep spam, vendors and wrong-practice inquiries separate.

Make the numbers comparable

  • Define the denominatorConsultation attendance is held consultations divided by booked consultations. Engagement rate is signed matters divided by qualified inquiries in the same inquiry cohort, with pending matters shown separately.
  • Keep one inquiry recordUse an inquiry ID, date, source, practice area, owner, stage and next action. Deduplicate repeat calls and forms; keep sensitive narratives in the authorized case system, outside marketing dashboards.
  • Ask how the person found youKeep their answer alongside tracked campaign data. A referral followed by a branded search should retain both touchpoints rather than silently giving search all the credit.

Marketing strategies for law firms by size

The same channel can serve different decisions. Write down what a person needs to understand before contacting you, who influences that decision and whether you can respond in their language. These are planning examples, not claims about campaign performance.

  • Solo attorney

Choose a focused practice page, accurate local profile and referral routine you can maintain. Protect consultation time and assign backup intake coverage before adding channels.

  • Small firm

Assign a marketing owner and an intake owner, even if those duties are part-time. Keep separate practice-area reports so one busy department does not hide another's poor fit.

  • Personal injury plan

Map urgent contact routes and conflict screening before testing paid traffic. Have counsel review any targeted outreach, testimonials or results language before release.

Small law firm marketing strategies work best when the workload is explicit. Remove an activity if nobody can approve it, publish it and handle the resulting conversations; a long channel list is not an operating plan.

Fix the website before buying traffic

Our October 2026 law firm website study audited 300 reachable websites from OpenStreetMap listings in 20 US metros, with 15 manual spot-checks. No firm is named. This is a technical sample, not a representative national survey or evidence of lost cases.

Prioritize by visitor impact

  • Prove contact works15% (46) had no tap-to-call link; 27% (81) had no contact form in homepage or contact page HTML. Test the real mobile route and a labeled form submission through inbox delivery; JavaScript and iframe forms can escape HTML detection.
  • Review privacy and measurement36% (107) had no privacy policy link; 22% (65) had no GA/GTM analytics signature. A missing signature does not prove no analytics, and a detected script does not prove working measurement or privacy compliance.
  • Clarify pages and technical details49% (148) had no LegalService or Attorney structured data, and only 1 site used LawFirm type. Review relevant markup against visible facts; missing schema alone does not establish a ranking problem.

Use our law firm website design guide to check practice pages and intake, then the WordPress maintenance checklist for recurring tests. In this sample, 72% (216) ran WordPress; the platform still needs an assigned maintenance owner.

Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Use local search to explain what the firm actually does and where it serves clients. Google's local ranking guidance identifies relevance, distance and prominence as core factors and says you cannot pay for better local ranking. A practical local search routine

  • Keep profile information accurateReview the firm's name, real location, phone, hours, category and website destination. Confirm the firm controls account access, and check current eligibility guidance before adding locations or practitioner profiles.
  • Match pages to real servicesCreate useful practice-area pages explaining scope, jurisdiction, attorney background and the next intake step. Add location detail only where you can describe a real service relationship, not copied city pages.
  • Maintain consistent business recordsCheck relevant directories and professional profiles against the approved firm record. Correct outdated phones or addresses and send visitors to a page that matches the service they searched for.
  • Review evidence beyond position checksUse Search Console to inspect indexing and relevant queries, then compare qualified inquiries by practice area. Save dates of changes; a position screenshot alone cannot show whether intake improved.

Law firm marketing ideas: content and reviews

Choose content from questions intake hears repeatedly: what the firm handles, what to bring to a consultation and how the engagement process works. Assign attorney review, jurisdiction and a review date to each page. Publish an English or Spanish version only when you can support that language through the contact journey.

  • Practice page

Explain who the service fits, common exclusions and how to request a consultation. Use concrete process information without predicting outcomes or implying an attorney-client relationship begins with a form.

  • Preparation resource

Offer a reviewed checklist of information to prepare. Keep sensitive document collection in an approved secure channel, and make clear that educational material is general information.

  • Review workflow

Have the responsible attorney approve when and how review invitations are sent. Use a consistent eligible-client process and a response policy that protects confidentiality.

Google Maps policy prohibits incentives for reviews and selectively soliciting positive reviews. Do not offer gifts, filter requests by satisfaction or ask clients to reveal matter details. Referral, email and direct mail marketing

Build a referral-source list around professional relevance, such as attorneys with complementary practices or business advisers serving your audience. Record the relationship, permitted contact route and next useful action. Have counsel approve any referral arrangement; this workflow does not assume referral payments or reciprocal promises.

Keep follow-up useful and controlled

  • Offer context a referrer can useShare accepted practice areas, service geography, language support and the approved introduction process. Do not ask for confidential matter details in a marketing reply.
  • Separate nurture from active intakeFor contacts who agreed to receive updates, send reviewed educational material through an approved mailing tool. Record permission, include a clear unsubscribe and stop promotional follow-up when requested; have counsel review applicable email rules.
  • Give every conversation an ownerLog the source and next action in the relationship record. Use intake totals to review relevance, while keeping case narratives and privileged information outside the campaign system.

Law firm marketing plan budget worksheet

Start with cash you can commit and staff hours you can protect. There is no universal percentage allocation in this worksheet: use written quotes, actual tool costs and your own intake records. Separate setup work from recurring activity so a website repair does not masquerade as a permanent monthly expense.

Fill with your amounts and hours, not industry benchmarks

Paid ads are optional, and we do not run them

If considering ads, request a specialist's written scope covering platform, targeting, exclusions, creative approval, landing pages, account ownership and reporting. Keep media spend separate from management fees and set a stop condition before launch. Test tracking without sending sensitive legal details to advertising tools, and do not buy traffic while intake is failing.

Our web development, WordPress management and WordPress maintenance start from $250, with a fixed written quote before work. Check published pricing for scope; this is not a price for a complete marketing program.

A 90-day law firm marketing campaign

This is a suggested execution schedule, not a forecast of results. Move a launch back if approvals, contact testing or staff coverage are incomplete. Keep the selected practice area and metric definitions stable enough to interpret the work.

  1. Days 1 to 15

    Baseline and repair

Complete the one-page plan, review intake records and test the phone and forms. Assign website fixes, account access and attorney approvals, then document acceptance tests.

  2. Days 16 to 30

    Prepare the assets

Correct profile information, finish the priority practice page and prepare the referral list. Set source labels, validate the scorecard and approve content and review invitations.

  3. Days 31 to 60

    Launch the selected work

Publish reviewed resources and begin approved relationship outreach. Record dates, costs, conversations and next actions; introduce an optional paid test only after its launch conditions pass.

  4. Days 61 to 90

    Review and choose

Compare inquiry quality and cohort outcomes with the baseline. Separate pending decisions from declines, check staff workload and write the next quarter's continue, revise or pause decisions.

Review the plan and decide what to buy

Quarterly review checklist

  • Reconcile the scorecardCheck duplicates, source attribution, pending matters and signed engagements against intake records. Explain changes in practice mix or capacity before crediting a channel.
  • Compare spend and staff timeReview actual cost against the worksheet, including review and follow-up work. Keep, revise or pause each activity with a reason and a responsible owner.
  • Retest assets and approvalsVerify calls, forms, profile details and referral destinations. Ask the attorney to review changed claims, content, review practices and state-specific requirements.
  • Write the next quarter's decisionUpdate capacity, audience, baseline, budget and review date. Preserve the previous plan so later reviews can distinguish a changed strategy from changed measurement.

Bring us a defined implementation need

  • A website or WordPress repair with a testable result.
  • Agency delivery under your brand, with staging on your domain and NDA and non-solicitation available.
  • A postcard campaign where a verified website finding fits the audience.

Do not buy from us for this

  • Paid ad management, which we do not run.
  • Guaranteed rankings, case volume or legal compliance opinions.
  • More promotion when your team cannot handle current inquiries.

Frequently asked questions

What should a law firm marketing plan include?

Include the audience, accepted matters, capacity, intake baseline, goal, channels, owners, budget, attorney approval and review date. Tie every activity to a destination and a measurable intake outcome.

Where can I find law firm marketing plan examples?

Use the one-page template above and the practice-area examples as starting points. Replace every blank with your own records and decisions; the examples are planning tools, not client case studies.

What are practical small law firm marketing strategies?

Start with a working contact journey, accurate local profile, useful practice pages and a manageable referral routine. Assign intake coverage and attorney review before adding more channels.

How does a marketing plan for a personal injury law firm differ?

Prioritize urgent contact routes, clear practice fit and reliable screening. Have the responsible attorney review targeted outreach, advertising and results language under applicable state rules; past outcomes do not predict future matters.

How much should a law firm spend on marketing?

Set a cash cap and staff-time allowance from your own finances, capacity and records. Price each workstream with quotes and actual costs, retain a reserve and define when to pause; this guide provides no universal spend benchmark.

Which law firm marketing technology is necessary?

Use a secure inquiry record, dependable scheduling, controlled account access and source reporting your team can maintain. Select tools around the workflow and privacy requirements; buying a larger stack does not fix unclear ownership.

Can personalized postcards support law firm referral outreach?

They can support an approved professional introduction when the message is relevant. Our service centers on a verified finding about each recipient's website, so it may not suit a simple legal referral note. Attorney review is still necessary.

Does Fer Marketing provide a complete law firm marketing service?

We provide scoped website development, WordPress work and personalized postcard campaigns. We do not run paid ads or provide legal advice, and we do not promise rankings or case volume. Ask for a written quote for the specific implementation you need.
