Law firm website design: what 300 sites revealed
Our October 2026 law firm website study audited 300 reachable sites from OpenStreetMap listings across 20 US metros, with 15 manual spot-checks. No firm is named. These are observations from that sample, not estimates for every US law firm.
- 196 sites had at least one of 10 basic issues
- 65%
- 75 sites had three or more basic issues
- 25%
- 216 sites ran WordPress
- 72%

Website design for law firms: the essentials
Build around visitor questions: Do you handle my issue, do you serve my area, who would represent me and how do I contact you? Navigation should answer those questions without requiring a visitor to understand the firm's internal departments. Make the primary contact action visible before decorative elements compete for attention.
Practice area pages
Give each actual service a useful page with the matters handled, geographic scope, responsible attorney and next step. Explain the process in plain language, with attorney review of legal content and no copied city pages that add nothing useful.
Attorney bios
Use real photos and verified names, roles, admissions, education and experience. Connect each bio to relevant practice pages, distinguish current credentials from past roles and publish only claims the firm can substantiate.
Contact and intake
Show a readable phone number with a tel: link and a short, labeled form. Explain who receives the inquiry and what happens next, using a response commitment only if the firm can actually meet it.
Privacy and clarity
Link a firm-approved privacy policy beside intake and in the footer. Describe the data practices the site actually uses, identify the firm and offices accurately and provide attorney-approved relationship and confidentiality notices.
Keep the path usable
- Write a clear homepage headline.State the practice and service area in one H1, then use descriptive subheadings. A logo or a vague slogan should not carry the entire explanation of what the firm does.
- Make mobile and keyboard use part of design review.Check readable text, contrast, visible focus, descriptive links and persistent form labels. Test menus, errors and confirmation messages with a keyboard and on an actual phone, including a narrow 390px viewport.
- Plan both languages as complete journeys. If the firm serves English and Spanish speakers, review practice copy, bios, form errors and confirmations in both languages. Name the person who can handle each language after an inquiry arrives.
Law firm website examples by practice
These are illustrative design patterns, not named firms or case studies. The best small law firm websites can be compact: a useful homepage, focused practice pages, accurate bios and a reliable contact route. Publish only pages the firm can keep accurate and support with real services.
| Practice | What good looks like | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Family law | Calm copy, clear next steps | Fear or outcome promises |
| Criminal defense | Visible call link, honest hours | Unstaffed urgent contact claims |
| Personal injury | Clear intake and fee explanation | Implied guaranteed recovery |
| Small general firm | Defined services and attorneys | Unsupported breadth claims |
Small law firm website designs that stay manageable
A solo attorney does not need a sprawling directory to look credible. Use an accurate bio, authentic office details and a small set of service pages the attorney can review. If intake capacity is limited, explain the contact process rather than adding chat or booking tools nobody owns.
H1: {{practice}} attorney serving {{actual_service_area}}
Opening: the matters we handle and who this page is for.
Scope: services offered, limits and relevant office information.
Process: what happens when you contact the firm.
Attorney: verified bio link and relevant experience.
Questions: practical answers reviewed by the responsible attorney.
Contact: tap-to-call, short form and firm-approved notices.WordPress vs a law firm website builder
WordPress powered 72% (216) of our sample. That describes usage, not design quality, security or superior search performance. Choose the platform around editorial needs, intake integrations and the person responsible for keeping it working.
| Decision | WordPress | Hosted builder |
|---|---|---|
| Editing | Test theme and editor | Test template controls |
| Intake | Verify plugin integration | Verify native or embedded form |
| Care | Assign updates and backups | Check vendor care scope |
| Control | Review hosting and licenses | Review export and account terms |
| Technical SEO | Check theme and plugins | Check available settings |
WordPress can fit when
- Staff need to maintain practice pages and attorney content regularly.
- The required integration works in a tested, supported setup.
- A named owner has responsibility for backups, updates and recovery.
A hosted builder can fit when
- The site is straightforward and available templates meet the brief.
- Its contact tools, language support and accessibility controls pass testing.
- The firm accepts the vendor's limits, account terms and exit options.
Keep a sound existing platform if focused repairs solve the problem. For WordPress, assign management for content and operational work, and maintenance for technical care, with responsibilities written down. A redesign does not replace ongoing ownership.
↑ Back to topLaw firm website design: speed, schema and intake
Make technical acceptance observable. In our sample, 11% (33) took more than 800 ms to start responding; median TTFB was 143 ms. TTFB measures the start of a server response, not how quickly the entire page becomes usable, so inspect the rendered page as well.
What to test and record
- Check representative mobile pages for speed.Test the homepage, a practice page, a bio and contact. Compare before and after under similar conditions, reduce oversized images and unnecessary scripts, and retest with consent tools and intake integrations active.
- Use one descriptive H1 per page as a content standard.Inspect the rendered headings, including hidden template headings. Our audit found 27% (80) without exactly one H1; that flag is a structural review prompt, not proof of a search penalty.
- Review LegalService and Attorney structured data.Use appropriate markup for the firm and ensure any existing Attorney markup matches the entity described. Keep name, URL, phone and address consistent with visible content, validate the output and remove conflicting duplicate markup; schema does not promise rankings or enhanced results.
- Test intake beyond a success message.Submit a labeled test, confirm staff inbox delivery and any CRM record, then verify confirmation and error states. Test the tel: link on a phone, assign an intake owner and repeat after changes to mail routing or form integrations.
Keep the site discoverable with accurate titles, descriptions, working internal links and intentional redirects from replaced URLs. Use SEO for lawyers to plan ongoing search work and a law firm marketing plan to connect the site to intake capacity. Neither is a substitute for an attorney reviewing the content.
↑ Back to topPre-launch checklist mapped to study findings
Run this on protected staging, then repeat critical checks after launch. The figures below use N=300 and the rounded percentages published in our study. Some are supplementary observations outside the headline set of 10 basic issues.
| Study finding | Observed | Launch check |
|---|---|---|
| No legal schema | 49% (148) | Validate matching markup |
| No privacy link | 36% (107) | Open approved policy |
| H1 not exactly one | 27% (80) | Inspect page headings |
| No form in checked HTML | 27% (81) | Submit and confirm delivery |
| No tap-to-call | 15% (46) | Test tel: on a phone |
| Neither form nor tel: | 10% (30) | Verify contact routes |
| No meta description | 15% (44) | Review page metadata |
| No viewport tag | 4% (12) | Inspect mobile rendering |
| Mixed content | 3% (9) | Inspect loaded resources |
| Broken link or image | 5% (14) | Crawl and review failures |
- Step 1
Agree on scope and page inventory
List existing URLs, retained content, practice pages, bios, languages and contact routes. Name the attorney approving legal copy, the intake owner and the person authorized to approve launch.
- Step 2
Build and review on protected staging
Keep the draft private, use test data and prevent test messages from reaching unintended recipients. Review mobile layouts and the complete visitor journey with approved copy before accepting the design.
- Step 3
Complete the evidence checklist
Record the page, device, test result and owner for each failed check above. Verify privacy notices, schema, headings, form delivery, tap-to-call and key links; resolve launch blockers rather than accepting a visual review alone.
- Step 4
Prepare release and recovery
Back up the existing site, prepare relevant URL redirects and record DNS, hosting and rollback responsibilities. Confirm account access and a recovery route before touching the live site.
- Step 5
Launch, verify and hand over
Check live forms and phone links, remove unintended indexing blocks and confirm redirects and measurement. Give the firm account ownership details, editing instructions, test results and a named maintenance owner.
Law firm website design cost: quote the work
Fer Marketing web development starts from $250, with a fixed written quote before work begins. This is a starting price for scoped work, not a promise that a complete law firm website costs $250. The quote should identify deliverables, dependencies and acceptance checks so you can compare the actual work.
| Factor | What changes the work | Decide first |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Pages, bios, languages | Who writes and approves |
| Design | Adaptation or custom layouts | Required page types |
| Intake | Forms, routing, CRM | Destination and owner |
| Migration | Old URLs and content | Keep, rewrite or redirect |
| Platform | Hosting and integrations | Accounts and dependencies |
| Handoff | Training and care | Who maintains what |
Current site and reason for change: {{URL_and_problem}}
Practice areas, offices and languages: {{actual_scope}}
Required pages and content owner: {{inventory_and_approver}}
Intake tools and staff recipient: {{form_phone_CRM_owner}}
Existing accounts and migration needs: {{hosting_domain_URLs}}
Desired launch date and dependencies: {{date_and_constraints}}
Acceptance checks and ongoing care: {{tests_and_responsibilities}}Review pricing and send the brief through contact. Identify recurring hosting, license and maintenance responsibilities separately in the scope; never assume they are covered by a development starting price. Payment is by card through Stripe after scope is agreed.
↑ Back to topAttorney advertising: approve before publishing
Give the responsible attorney a review packet
- Verify claims and permissions.Review credentials, specialization language, awards, testimonials and any past-results material. Include the supporting records and necessary permissions; remove claims the firm cannot verify.
- Approve disclosures and intake wording.Have counsel determine applicable notices, advertising labels, relationship wording and handling of unsolicited information. Keep the approval attached to the actual version of the pages and forms.
- Review both languages and future edits.Have the responsible reviewer assess English and Spanish claims, including headlines and buttons. Repeat approval when material claims change, and give staff a clear route for requesting corrections.
White-label websites for agencies serving law firms
Agencies can use our white-label web development to deliver the approved brief under their own brand. Staging can sit on the agency's domain, with NDA and non-solicitation available. The agency keeps the client relationship and coordinates attorney approval.
A reviewable scope
Send the design, page inventory, integrations and acceptance criteria. We confirm the work in a fixed written quote before starting; identify copywriting and legal review responsibilities explicitly.
Staging and evidence
Review the build on staging with mobile checks and recorded intake tests. Keep test data separate from actual prospective-client information and route questions through the agency's chosen contact.
An operational handoff
Document account ownership, dependencies, updates, backups and the support route. Use the same acceptance record to show what passed and which continuing responsibilities the agency or firm owns.
Fer Marketing is operated by Fer LLC in Wyoming and was founded by Fernando Marcano, an IT engineer with more than 20 years of hands-on experience. We work with the US market in English and Spanish. For agency planning, see white-label WordPress and white-label WordPress pricing.
A useful fit
- You have an approved scope and need technical delivery under your brand.
- You can name the attorney reviewer and intake owner.
- You want documented checks and an agreed maintenance handoff.
Resolve these first
- Content ownership or account access is still disputed.
- The project depends on unapproved legal claims.
- The firm expects a website alone to produce guaranteed cases.
Frequently asked questions
How much does law firm website design cost?
Our web development starts from $250, with a fixed written quote before work. A full site is scoped around pages, copy, design, languages, intake integrations and migration. The starting price does not define a complete website package; confirm ongoing hosting, licenses and care responsibilities in the quote.
What makes the best law firm website design?
A strong design makes the firm's actual services, attorneys, service area and contact route easy to understand. It works on a phone, has verified content and passes intake testing. Visual style matters, but it cannot replace accurate information, reliable delivery or attorney review.
Is WordPress a good law firm website builder?
WordPress can suit firms that need editable practice pages and supported integrations, provided someone owns updates, backups and recovery. It ran 72% (216) of the sites in our sample, which is a usage finding rather than proof of superiority. A hosted builder may suit a simpler brief if its controls and contact tools pass review.
What should the best small law firm websites include?
Start with a clear homepage, pages for actual practice areas, verified attorney bios and a contact page with tap-to-call and a tested form. Include an approved privacy policy and relevant notices. Add pages when they serve a real visitor need and someone can maintain them.
How do I choose between law firm website designers?
Ask each designer to work from the same page inventory and acceptance checklist. Compare content responsibilities, migration, account ownership, mobile testing, form delivery and handoff. Request a fixed written scope and have the responsible attorney review advertising claims before publication.
Does law firm website design include SEO?
The scope can include technical foundations such as titles, descriptions, headings, redirects and structured data. Define those deliverables in writing. Ongoing content, local visibility and search measurement need their own plan; a new design does not guarantee rankings or case volume.
Do family law, criminal defense and personal injury sites need different designs?
They need different information priorities even when they share a technical foundation. Family law may need careful contact preferences, criminal defense clear actual availability, and personal injury a clear explanation of intake and any fee claims. Have the attorney approve the practice-specific wording and contact process.
Can agencies hire you as a white-label law firm website agency?
Yes. Agencies can use our white-label web development, with staging on their domain and NDA and non-solicitation available. We agree on a fixed written quote before work. The agency manages the client relationship and coordinates legal content approval with the firm.
Send your site and priorities through contact, WhatsApp or fer@fer.marketing for a fixed written quote before work, with web development from $250 and white-label delivery for agencies. We reply the same business day, 9 AM to 9 PM ET.
