Self mailer: formats, templates and USPS rules

A self mailer is a printed piece sent without an envelope, with the recipient's address on the piece itself. A postcard shows the message immediately; a folded bifold or trifold gives you room to explain an offer across several reading surfaces. Choose the format around what the reader needs, then confirm the postal construction before designing the artwork.

What is a self mailer? Start with the format

In everyday marketing language, self mailers include postcards and folded advertising pieces that carry their own mailing address. The narrower USPS folded self-mailer category concerns folded, sealed, unbound sheets prepared as letter-size mail. A brochure placed inside an envelope is a different construction.

  • Postcard

An unfolded card with two printed sides. It suits a visible headline, a short explanation and a reply route, without asking the reader to unfold anything.

  • Bifold mailer

One fold creates two physical panels and four printable faces. The inside can hold a connected explanation or image spread while the outside introduces the offer and carries the address.

  • Trifold mailer

Two folds create three physical panels and six printable faces. A staged introduction can lead to an explanation, supporting detail and a single next action.

For a broader format comparison, see direct mail postcards and the direct mail letter guide. The choice is about how much explanation belongs on paper, not a universal claim that one format gets more responses.

Self mailer vs postcard: when a fold earns its cost

A folded piece earns its extra production work when removing a panel would remove information the reader needs to decide. Start with the intended action and work backward. Extra space is useful only if it improves the explanation instead of encouraging unrelated offers.

Choose by the reader's task
NeedUseful formatMain tradeoff
One visible invitationPostcardLimited room

An ordered explanationTrifoldMore panel planning
A letter + enclosureEnvelopeMore assembly

Choose a folded piece when

  • A service comparison needs enough space to keep conditions readable.
  • A product explanation depends on connected pictures and captions.
  • A useful newsletter or reference sheet deserves to be kept.

Keep the postcard when

  • A headline, verified observation and brief note explain the offer.
  • The supporting material is better read on an updatable web page.
  • The extra faces would repeat the same claim or add filler.

For postcard coupons vs folded mailer coupons, compare the room needed for eligibility, exclusions and redemption instructions. A simple coupon may fit on a card; a set of related offers may justify a fold. Do not shrink important terms just to preserve a preferred format.

Folded self mailer rules: orientation and sealing

For letter-size folded pieces, USPS DMM 201.3.14 requires the final fold at the bottom, or the leading right edge for an oblong. Stock and closure depend on weight and design. A standard bifold or trifold up to 1 ounce can use 70-pound book-grade paper or equivalent with two 1-inch tabs, or permitted glue.

Tabs must be nonperforated. Closures must preserve address and barcode readability; see USPS Publication 25, tabs, tape and glue. Ask the mail house to mark every closure and reserved postal area on its production drawing.

Get the construction confirmed in writing

  • Specify the finished piece, not just the flat sheet.Ask for finished dimensions, assembled weight, thickness, stock specification, fold direction and intended mail class. Have the supplier identify the applicable DMM provisions rather than approving a design from its marketing name.
  • Get a drawing viewed from the address side.Label the top, bottom, leading edge, trailing edge, final fold and sealed edges. Confirm which face carries the address before approving copy placement.
  • Review any departure from a plain folded sheet.Disclose coupons with perforations, inserts, unusual coatings, windows or attachments before requesting a production quote. Ask what each change does to the selected specification and price.
  • Resolve postal questions before the print order.Have the printer or mail house review an assembled dummy and obtain USPS design guidance when the construction is uncertain. Keep that review with the final approved drawing.

Self mailer design: assign every face a job

Build a paper dummy before arranging artwork on a screen. Label each face, fold it in the proposed production order and read it closed, partly open and fully open. This catches an upside-down headline or a reply instruction hidden under the address face before it becomes an expensive correction.

Make the reading order intentional

  • Lead with the reader's reason to care.Use a concrete offer or useful subject. 'Compare the service options for your property' is an illustrative opening; replace it with something you can actually provide.
  • Give each face one purpose.Separate introduction, explanation, supporting material and reply instructions. Repeating a logo everywhere does not replace a clear progression.
  • Keep essential conditions with the offer.Put qualifications, exclusions and real expiration terms where the reader encounters the offer. Do not rely on an almost unreadable footnote or an easily detached section.
  • Use one primary action with an alternative route.A short web address and optional QR code can lead to the same destination, with a phone alternative. Tell readers what they will find there and what happens after they reply.

Our direct mail design guide covers the broader creative brief. Here, the priority is whether each face remains understandable in the actual opening sequence, including for someone who starts on the address side.

Folded self mailer template: bifold and trifold

These self mailer templates are content outlines, not production-ready dielines or claims about completed campaigns. Replace every placeholder with approved material. Ask the printer for its own bleed, fold allowance, safe areas, postal overlay and panel order before laying out the final file.

How to prepare a folded self mailer

Keep the campaign brief, supplier drawing, merged proof and approval record together. Each answers a different question: why this audience, how the piece is made, what each recipient sees and who authorized production. The sequence below works whether you manage the project yourself or hire a specialist.

  1. Step 1

    Define the audience and decision

Write who should receive the piece, what they should understand and what you want them to do next. Confirm the offer exists and someone can handle replies before selecting a print quantity.

  2. Step 2

    Choose the smallest useful format

Draft the message as a postcard first, then identify what would be lost without an inside spread. Choose a bifold or trifold only when that missing explanation matters to the decision.

  3. Step 3

    Request the supplier's construction plan

Send the content outline and intended mailing method to the printer or mail house. Obtain the finished specification, fold drawing, closure plan, postal areas and applicable requirements before buying artwork or stock.

  4. Step 4

Write and fold a labeled dummy

Assign each face a purpose, print a rough copy and fold it. Read it from both outside faces, check the first reveal and confirm that contact details and material terms are easy to find.

  5. Step 5

    Prepare and review personalization

Confirm recipient names, roles and addresses; remove duplicates and requested exclusions. Inspect merged samples for long names, missing fields, wrong-language copy and any mismatch between the printed message and its destination.

  6. Step 6

    Approve an assembled production proof

Check actual-size text, image clarity, fold alignment, closures, reserved areas and the QR destination. Ask the supplier to confirm the approved proof matches the quoted postal construction; resolve changes before authorizing the run.

  7. Step 7

Mail and retain the campaign record

Record the approved file, mailed quantity, handoff date, supplier confirmation and total spend. Keep sample pieces and give the reply owner the same offer, conditions and reference code shown in the mailer.

Self mailer costs: ask for separate line items

We do not publish a folded self-mailer price. Request a written quote for the exact piece and mailing plan, then compare suppliers on the same scope. A low print-only unit price says little about the cost of an addressed, folded, sealed and accepted mailing.

Total spend = data + copy/design + print + finishing + mail preparation + postage + other agreed charges.
Cost per mailed piece = total campaign spend / actual quantity mailed.
Record fixed setup costs separately from quantity-dependent charges.
Compare the same approved specification and mailing quantity across quotes.

For postage, check the current USPS price list, Notice 123. Have the supplier state the category and eligibility used in its calculation; 'no envelope' does not establish a postcard postage price. Our postcard marketing cost guide explains the separate postcard offer.

Self mailer examples: choose a useful hypothesis

These are hypothetical planning examples, not client work or reported results. Each gives the inside faces a reason to exist. Before mailing, ask whether the same decision could be supported just as clearly by a shorter card and a web page.

  • Business service comparison

A bifold contrasts clearly defined service scopes, with exclusions beside each option. The reply asks for a scope discussion rather than promising a particular outcome.

  • Event invitation

A trifold introduces the event, explains the program and states attendance conditions. Use it when those details help the recipient decide before visiting the registration page.

  • Customer newsletter

A bifold explains a meaningful service change and what customers should do about it. Keep account-specific or sensitive information out of the acquisition-style creative.

Review usefulness before scaling

  • Define what a useful reply means.Separate a request from a qualified conversation or a sale. Pick a definition connected to the offer, and have the person answering calls use the same one.
  • Keep a format comparison interpretable. If testing a postcard against a folded piece, keep audience selection and the underlying offer comparable. Record differences in timing and creative instead of attributing every change to the fold.
  • Record costs as well as responses.A folded piece can generate more conversations yet cost more per useful conversation. Evaluate the actual spend and business value without projecting an unsupported response rate.

A QR visit is not proof that someone read the complete piece or wants a sales call. Keep measurement proportionate, respect requested exclusions and improve the offer or audience when replies reveal a mismatch. See the direct mail campaign guide for campaign planning.

When our personalized postcards are the right fit

Fer Marketing sells personalized postcards. Our standard offer is $10 per custom postcard with a 50-card minimum ($500); the intro pack for a first campaign is 100 custom postcards for $500 ($5 per card). Format is confirmed in the written quote.

What the postcard service includes

  • Prospect research and one verified website finding per prospect. The message gives the recipient a concrete observation about their own website rather than a generic claim about lost revenue.
  • Design, printing and USPS First-Class postage. These belong to the published postcard package, not a quote for folded mailer production.
  • A QR code to a branded report page for that prospect. The card starts the explanation; the report provides supporting detail. Agencies can run the service white-label.

Read the personalized postcard campaign guide, including the recorded webinar, to inspect our method. Agencies can review white-label direct mail; businesses can compare client acquisition services and published pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a self mailer?

A self mailer is a printed piece mailed without an envelope, with the address on the piece itself. Marketing usage includes postcards and folded pieces; USPS has a specific folded self-mailer category for qualifying letter-size constructions.

Is a self mailer the same as a postcard?

A postcard is an unfolded example of mail without an envelope. A folded self mailer has inside content and needs a construction and sealing plan. Choose based on the explanation the reader needs, not a presumed response advantage.

What is the difference between a bifold and a trifold mailer?

A bifold has one fold and four printable faces. A trifold has two folds and six printable faces. Both need a deliberate reading sequence and an address face planned with the supplier.

Where can I get a folded self mailer template?

Use the content outlines on this page to draft the message, then request the production template from your printer or mail house. It should identify panel order, fold allowances, safe areas, postal areas and closure positions for the selected construction.

Do all self mailers need tabs?

Not every format uses the same closure. Qualifying folded self-mailers can use tabs or permitted glue, depending on the construction. Ask the supplier to specify the applicable USPS requirements before printing; do not apply a folded-piece recipe to an ordinary postcard.

Can a folded mailer be used for EDDM?

Potentially, if the finished piece meets the requirements for the chosen EDDM service. EDDM Retail uses eligible flats, so a standard letter-size template does not establish eligibility. Confirm the finished construction before ordering print.

Are folded mailer coupons better than postcard coupons?

A fold can provide room for several related offers and readable conditions. A postcard may be sufficient for a simple offer. Compare the actual audience, total cost and useful replies rather than assuming either format always performs better.

Does Fer Marketing sell bifold or trifold self mailers?

Our published direct mail offer is personalized postcards with prospect research, a verified website finding, design, printing, USPS First-Class postage and a QR report page. If your message needs a printed inside spread, a folded-mailer specialist is a better match.

Send your audience, offer and format preference to fer@fer.marketing or contact us on WhatsApp. We reply the same business day, 9 AM to 9 PM ET, and confirm a written quote before postcard work, including white-label campaigns for agencies.
