What is LLM SEO, and how does it relate to regular SEO?
LLM stands for large language model. Buyers use the term LLM SEO optimization for work intended to improve visibility when an assistant answers a question about a service, product or problem. You may also see GEO, generative engine optimization, or AEO, answer engine optimization. Ask what the provider will actually change and how they will verify it.
Traditional SEO still matters: a useful service page needs a stable URL, discovery links, readable content and a working contact path. The additional task is checking how assistants describe your business and which sources they cite. A brand mention, a citation to your page and a lead are different outcomes. Report them separately.
↑ Back to topHow AI search finds and uses sources
Separate a model's learned knowledge from a web-enabled answer. For a business owner, a practical target is a current public page that a search system can retrieve and use as evidence. Publishing a page does not establish that a model has learned it, or that an assistant will cite it.
Google's AI features documentation describes related searches across subtopics, called query fan-out. Supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. It specifies no special AI file or schema requirement. These are Google's rules, not a universal selection formula.
OpenAI's crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot for search, GPTBot for potential training content and ChatGPT-User for user-triggered visits. Search and training permissions are independent. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for surfacing sites in search, rather than foundation-model training, and Perplexity-User for requested visits.
Our implementation approach follows those distinctions: make the right page accessible, answer the buyer's question directly and supply checkable evidence. Those steps improve the source you offer; they do not reveal or control a provider's private ranking system. For platform-specific checks, use our guide to appearing in ChatGPT.
↑ Back to topCheck crawlability before commissioning more content
Inspect the page a crawler actually receives
- Test the important URLs.Check the final HTTP response, redirects and canonical URL for each priority service page. Inspect robots directives and accidental noindex settings. Keep customer accounts, private files and staging environments protected.
- Review robots.txt and the firewall together. If you want ChatGPT search access, review OAI-SearchBot rules and the provider's published IP verification guidance. Do not enable training as a prerequisite. Check CDN and hosting events for blocked requests or browser challenges.
- Read the delivered content.Confirm that the service definition, evidence and contact details are present in the returned HTML. Check what remains accessible without clicking tabs or submitting a form. Resolve empty templates and failed script requests before rewriting the whole site.
- Repair discovery paths.Link important pages from relevant existing pages and include canonical public URLs in the sitemap. Use the WordPress sitemap guide for WordPress-specific checks. A sitemap entry is a discovery aid, not proof of indexing.
Both OpenAI and Perplexity publish bot and IP guidance. Verify real requests against it. A test that merely copies a user-agent name cannot prove that the actual provider can reach your site.
↑ Back to topMake each business fact and answer easy to verify
Entity clarity: who provides what, for whom?
Put the business name, responsible person, services, genuine service area and contact details in visible text. Keep the same facts on your About page, service pages and official profiles. Describe remote delivery honestly; do not invent branch offices to cover more locations.

Structured content: answer first, then explain conditions
Start a section with the answer to a real buying question, then add scope, exceptions and evidence. For a service, explain the deliverables, required access, approval process and what changes the quote. Use descriptive headings, ordered instructions for tasks and comparison tables only where they help a buyer decide.
Make passages understandable on their own: name the product or service instead of relying on 'this solution' from a previous section. Attribute outside claims with a source link beside the claim. Mark examples as examples, name the author and revise dates when substantive facts change.
Use appropriate Organization, Service or Article structured data to describe the facts already on the page. Keep names, URLs and contact details consistent, and check for conflicting plugin output. Do not insert hidden claims into JSON-LD or treat FAQ markup as a citation switch. For broader commercial page planning, see our B2B SEO guide.
↑ Back to topTreat llms.txt as optional publishing support
The llms.txt proposal describes a curated Markdown overview with links to useful material. It serves a different purpose from robots.txt access rules. Publishing one does not establish that a particular search product reads it or uses it to select citations.
If you maintain one, include approved public pages, concise descriptions and working canonical links. Keep Markdown versions consistent with the visible page, especially scope, contact details and dates. Exclude private customer material. Fix broken access and incomplete service pages before spending the budget on alternate formats.
Our llms.txt WordPress guide covers the publishing workflow. Fer Markdown for AI is an existing tool for WordPress Markdown output. Neither should be sold as a guaranteed ranking or recommendation mechanism.
↑ Back to topEarn evidence that exists beyond your own claims
Distinguish an AI answer's citation from a third-party mention of your company. A citation points to a source used in that answer. An independent mention can help a buyer verify who you are, but its existence does not prove it caused an AI recommendation.
Work on proof you can stand behind
- Correct official profiles and relevant directories.Resolve old business names, domains, service descriptions and phone numbers. Select directories your buyers actually use instead of buying bulk listings.
- Publish work with a clear boundary around the claim.Describe the starting problem, your contribution and the outcome you can substantiate. Ask for permission before identifying a customer. Keep unsupported revenue and traffic claims out of the write-up.
- Contribute something worth referencing.Offer original documentation, a useful tool, a clear comparison or an expert explanation to a relevant publication or partner. Avoid fabricated reviews and paid mention packages presented as earned authority.
You can inspect our founder and published Upwork proof on About Fer LLC, and examples of delivered work in the portfolio. These demonstrate our technical work; we do not present them as LLM SEO case studies or claim AI visibility results from them.
↑ Back to topMeasure access, answer quality and business outcomes separately
| Layer | Record | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Access | URL, response, indexing checks and verified crawler requests | A crawl is not a citation or lead |
| Answer sample | Exact prompt, date, language, product, search mode, answer and cited URLs | A saved sample is not total market visibility |
| Referral visits | Identifiable referring source, landing page and inquiry events | Missing referral data is not proof of no AI influence |
| Qualified inquiries | Lead source, requested service, fit and eventual outcome | An increase alone does not isolate the cause |
Build a repeatable prompt set from actual sales questions. Include unbranded service searches, comparisons and questions about your company in each customer language. Save the whole answer and its links. Repeat observations over time with the same recorded conditions; answers can vary, so do not call a single screenshot a ranking.
Review referral traffic and completed inquiry events in your analytics, then ask leads how they found you. Record self-reported sources separately from observed referrals. Label any visibility percentage with its exact prompt set and observation count so it cannot be mistaken for market share.
Google reports AI feature traffic within Search Console's Web performance data. Treat it as combined search reporting, rather than a standalone LLM SEO dashboard.
↑ Back to topHow to turn an LLM SEO audit into shipped changes
- Step 1
Set the commercial scope
Select the services, customer questions, languages and public pages that matter. Record an answer and referral baseline before editing.
- Step 2
Resolve access blockers
Document robots, indexing, response and firewall findings. Test the proposed changes without exposing protected content.
- Step 3
Improve the source pages
Clarify business facts, answer missing buyer questions, add verifiable evidence and align structured data with visible text. Update optional Markdown files only from approved content.
- Step 4
Validate and hand off
Review changes on staging, test the inquiry form and document the final URLs and checks. Agree who approves publication, then repeat the same checks after launch and keep a dated change log.
- Step 5
Review outcomes
Repeat the saved prompt checks and compare identifiable referrals and qualified inquiries. Prioritize the next change from evidence rather than promising a citation date.
How to use LLM SEO news without chasing every claim
Check the provider's documentation before changing a bot policy or buying a tool after an announcement. The public sources linked in this guide were checked on October 20, 2026. Revisit the OpenAI crawler guide, Google Search Central AI guidance, Perplexity crawler guidance and llms.txt proposal when reviewing a new claim.
Separate a documented product change from an agency experiment. For an experiment, look for the prompts, pages, dates, comparison method and limitations. Record a proposed change, the evidence behind it and how you will check it. Avoid rewriting a useful service page solely because a news post claims a new universal ranking factor.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy LLM SEO instead of regular SEO?
Start with the actual problem. If important pages are inaccessible or unclear, fix those foundations first. Add AI answer checks to your existing search and inquiry measurement. Ask a provider to explain which work is shared and which deliverables specifically address AI search.
Do I have to allow AI training to be found in search?
OpenAI documents separate search and training controls in the crawler guide linked above. Scope the permissions you want instead of allowing every bot by default.
Is an llms.txt plugin enough?
No. An optional file cannot repair blocked pages, contradictory business information or unsupported claims. First establish what prevents discovery or makes the source unhelpful, then decide whether alternate publishing formats belong in the scope.
How long does LLM SEO take to show results?
Implementation dates depend on the agreed changes and your stack. Search visibility and citations are outside the implementer's control. Separate delivery dates for fixes from later observation checkpoints; a provider should not promise a date for an assistant to recommend you.
Do I need a paid AI visibility tracking tool?
You can start with saved prompts, answer captures, analytics and a lead-source field. A paid tool may help repeat observations, but check what products, languages and prompts it covers, whether it stores cited URLs and how it defines visibility.
What does Fer LLC include, and how is it priced?
Send your site, priority services, languages and examples of the answers you want to improve. We propose a written scope for access checks, page edits, structured data, optional Markdown publishing and measurement. The quote depends on the agreed work; this page does not promise a standard package price.
Can you guarantee a ChatGPT citation or recommendation?
No. We can commit to agreed implementation and validation work. We cannot control which sources a provider selects, how it describes a business or whether a visitor becomes a customer.
